And so we are, really close to A8, on our way to Frejus. It is wintertime. Unfortunately, the weather is not so good. However, this is not a reason to stop us from taking a look at a vineyard. No matter the weather a walk will do us good. Furthermore, it is a high time to find ourselves somewhere near a nice restaurant. Two lions “walking” on a meadow are inviting us to visit Le Clos Des Roses. It would not be so pleasant if we faced some real ones instead. An impressive entrance works on us. We like that. You can see a beautiful vegetable garden and, as I mentioned before, there is a lot of space for walks. If you are a fan of strolls, you have already found one reason to come here.
I could cut the long story short and download three sentences form their website to finish this presentation. I would do this, because exactly these three sentences seem to describe this place the best:
“Visits in English and Fr7ench.
Accessible for people with reduced mobility.
Method of payment: credit cards, American Express, cash.”
It is a little vapid, with no character of its own and not highly invested… But as I have found something positive here, I am sure you will too. Even though some of you might get an impression of a little chaos in the general outline around that property, it can be a great place to organize weddings or other celebrations and events. An excellent wedding planner will be a key issue here. You have an accommodation base on the spot (a hotel), as well as a restaurant and places to relax, such as the spa and the Turkish bath. Unfortunately, so far I have not given the restaurant nor the spa a try, so I cannot tell you about it yet. But there is Chapelle – a beautifully situated chapel. If you happen to be a lover of a special kind of pine trees – stone pine – it is a place for you! Incredible, umbrella like treetops of that interesting kind of pine trees are a picturesque decoration of Frejus’ landscape. You can find them here in Le Clos des Roses and without a doubt it is the biggest asset of the vineyard. These august pine trees bring peace and quiet.
And is it worth coming here for the wine?
I would describe the wine as light, easy and pleasant. Did not stick out for me, though. The service polite, yet pretty passive.
To sum up, Domaine Le Clos des Roses consists of 10 hectares of grown grapevine in various shapes and nine kinds: Grenache, Mourvédre, Cinsault, Syrah, Rolle, Viognier, Cabernet Sauvignon blanc and Merlot. The fields of grapevines are really beautifully situated, surrounded by a lot of flowers. So it is a great idea to take an advantage of the Le Clos des Roses’ offer and go on a trip with a guide (in 2019 it cost around 10 euro per 1,5 hour) or without one – maximum of 3 euro per person but with a map and no crowds. For those who do not know how to create the field to play petangue there is another proposal from Domaine Le Clos de Roses – a trip plus instructions how to build it. We have not taken part in this option. However, I have seen the plan of the event and it seems that either the guide will give you a two times that long tour or two times slower one. It may also be followed by an incredibly detailed plan of a pentague filed that can take another hour and a half of explaining. In total – around 3 hours for 18 euros per person.
